WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A HOMEWORK QUIZ IN MATH?

The purpose of the homework quiz is not to assess learning directly.  When the students are given a homework assignment, they are expected to complete it, and then check their answers the next day in class.  We review as a whole class, usually putting the answers on the board.  This is when I assess learning informally. I will provide a further review if needed. We have the homework quiz as a little check to be sure that students are in fact checking their answers, paying attention to correct answers, and changing answers where needed.  Since students are more conscious to check answers (since they know it could potentially be on the quiz), they are more likely to ask questions if they have an incorrect answer.  It is also a great way to monitor the organization of students with notebook keeping and helps to show student responsibility.

For students that have not completed their homework, they are permitted to write down correct answers, for I do not want to deny them that.  I do expect them to pay attention to the problems that are being completed on the board and complete the work for missed problems.  These students are required to participate and complete problems on the board, and most do anyway, without asking.

Most students respond well to the quiz, because they know that it should be an easy 100%.  These quizzes are a great way to maintain an average or boost it a little. The quizzes are announced ahead of time, and I try to announce them when we get close to the end of the chapter. The day before the quiz I will give time for students to check to make sure they have all the necessary homework for the quiz. At this time they can request any pages that they may have misplaced. I will also sit with them at Study Skills on days 3 and 6 to make sure they have the problems they need, as well as make sure they understand the problems.
